Water Shortages in the Maldives

In most highly industrialized countries we have the luxury of having an abundant supply of fresh water.
We often forget that in many nations, particularly small island nations, water is a rare resource. For example, the average Maldivian has access to only 103 cubic meters of water per year. This is far less than the consumption of the average American. The situation in some areas is so severe that in a 2004 survey 30% of Maldivian’s reported not having enough water to drink.
As tourists from western countries we play an important role in the water shortages in the Maldives. The ever increasing influx of tourists to the island nation is putting an ever increasing strain on the tiny island nations already limited water resources. Given our tendency to consume large quantities of water during our short stays we end up takeing far too much water out of the system. Most westerners are probably not aware of the strain they are putting on the system. Nonetheless, the over consumption from resort guests is both hard on the environment and disrespectful to the residence of the Maldives.
There are a number of things you can do to reduce the amount of water you consume while on vacation in the Maldives. First, shorten your showers to just a few minutes, its all you really need anyway. Secondly, let your housekeeper know that you do not need your towels changed every day. Washing machines use a significant amount of water, water that could be used for other purposes. Thirdly, before choosing a resort inquire with the resort about how they obtain their water supply and what they are doing to conserve water. Consider staying at the most eco friendly resort. Finally, make a donation to a local environmental charity. Giving something back to the environment is a great way to offset your ecological footprint.

your comments about responsible water usage are not correct. Every resort in the maldives has it''s own desalination plant, so unless a tourist is staying at one of the few hotels on Male proper, they are not actually taking water away from the system and subsequently the local Maldivians. As you are aware the Maldives are a series of Coral Atolls and as such there is not a system as such. Each individual island has it''s own micro-system. There is rarely (if ever) a local population living on a resort island, so the tourists are not affecting the water resources of the local people (as regards consumption). Many of the resorts have completely insufficient sewage treatment facilities which could affect the water resources of the local Maldivians. This unfortunately is not something that an individual tourist can do anything about (unless they hold it in for their entire vacation).
Just thought you might want to know.
